“Worth hiking for” I would backpack just to have an excuse to eat this. My favorite dinner of the trip and at 520 cal, it delivers a nice energy boost. -Susan, San Joaquin Valley, CA “Backpacker Magazine, April 2005” Flavorful beef, fresh-tasting mushrooms, and a tangy sour cream finish made stroganoff a best seller long ago; the new vacuum-sealed packaging earns it a top spot this year. The stand-up pouch makes prep easy, the zipper keeps it hot, and the compact size let us dip down for the last bite.

“Too sweet for my taste” While the quality of the ingredients can't be argued with (they all re-hydrated very well), the sauce was way too sweet for my taste. Teriyaki has a tendency to lean on the sweet side to begin with, but this was borderline dessert sweet. :/

“Another good breakfast from MH” Folks this is a big breakfast, you may want to spit it if you are have something else along with it. It is also quite tasty. I really liked the sausage and hash. -Peter, Olympia, WA “Best of the "just add water" egg breakfasts” Nice mix of eggs, potatoes, sausage and seasonings that when wrapped in a tortilla, rival any breakfast burrito. Good with or without salsa. -Maynard, Midwest “Skillet Breakfast” Plenty of flavor and just the right amount of seasoning with a hint of smokey flaovor throughout the dish. When added to tortilla it provided a really nice balance to the meal. We added our own hot sauce for a twist. -Gregory Trimeloni, Roseville, CA

“Wonderful surprise on a misty trail morning” This is just bursting with flavor, who would have thought. Nice spicy meal to get you started in the morning. The eggs are fluffy, the ham juicy, and the peppers are spicy, what more can you ask of a meal you add only boiling water too? -Peter, Olympia, WA “As good as prepacked scrambed can get” If you are not going to pack and cook real eggs, this is the next best thing. Better than the scrambled with Bacon. -Buck, New Jersey “Yummy (love the peppers)” Considering this comes in a bag and you just add boiling water, it's amazing. Add the water slowly though so you don't get a runny mess. Add maybe half or so and let that sit and then add a little more if you need it. The scambled eggs are a little spongy, they might remind you of the egg stuff used at McDonalds but its was pretty good. The bacon was fine too. Try out the other version of this meal that uses bacon which is also good. -Kevin Roberge, Old Town, Maine “Backpacker Magazine, June 2003” Just add boiling water to the new stand-up pouch and you get a tummy-full of fluffy eggs with deliciously juicy ham and lightly crunchy red and green peppers.
“Not all that great” After two days of backpacking, this was my breakfast. I had a hard time with it and did not manage the entire thing. It had a spoiled taste to it.Do give it a try, though. It's cheap, so buy some and eat it before you get out on the trail. Luckily I had oatmeal as a backup and just happened to be camping in a few hundred acres of blueberries, so I didn't have too bad a morning. But nothing's worse than waking up to a beautiful sky, warming up by the fire, and getting a mouthful of blech. -Oak Hill, WV

“Quick Eggs” Pretty good. Surprisingly better than the Inertia trails brand but not as good as the Mountain House scrambled with Ham / peppers. -Buck, New Jersey “Wow!” Considering this comes in a bag and you just add boiling water, it's amazing. Add the water slowly though so you don't get a runny mess. Add maybe half or so and let that sit and then add a little more if you need it. The scambled eggs are a little spongy, they might remind you of the egg stuff used at McDonalds but its was pretty good. The bacon was fine too. “One of the better meals” Comes out on the soupy side but it has a great flavor - lots of meat - and is a really good warm-up if the weather is cold. -Pam, Honolulu, HI “Great meal” Great choice. Will go on all future trips. -Rich, IL “Amazing” Really hard for me to find something to eat on the trail without veggies or fruits, this stuff tastes GREAT and doesn't have chunks of vegetables. -Kayla, AL “Pretty good spaghetti” I took this on my camping trip and I enjoyed it for lunch. After cooking for about 10 minutes of cooking, I was pleased to have a very good and tasty spaghetti. I'd buy again. -Florida “Good Meal” Very tasty, meat needs a little extra time. -John Morton, North Carolina

“One of my top 5 flavors” So far Mountain House has consistently good flavor. One of my top flavors. The flavor is consistent with ala King dishes - just enough bell pepper flavor to kick up the taste. Lots of meat. Hint: w/ all pouch meals I like to shake the powdered flavor/thickener out of the bottom creases before adding water - makes it easier to mix everything well before closing up the pouch. -Pam, Honolulu, HI “Mountain House does it again” Prepared to the package directions, the texture of the vegetables remains slightly chewy, but an additional 5 minutes resting time makes you wonder if it really came out of a pouch. The consistency and taste of the sauce are spot on. Definitely something that I will make part of my regular orders. -Bill, Kabul, Afghanistan “Excellent dish” Like all these meals, this is better if you can give it more than the 10 minutes recommended cooking time. -Pam, Baja Mexico “Best Mountain House I've Had” This was really outstanding for a freeze dried meal. Seriously the only reason I knew it was freeze dried was cause I ate it out of the container. -Buck, NJ

“Better than I thought it would be.” Better than I thought it would be. I actually ate this at home. I had been carrying the stew around in my pack as a last resort while backpacking, for a couple of years. While organizing my backpacking equipment I come across the beef stew. There was another freeze dry product in the same food bag that had developed a small hole in the package. I threw that one away (different company). Since I was hungry I decided to try the beef stew. The beef stew was okay but didn't remind much of homemade beef stew or even canned beef stew. I ate 3/4's of the package and gave the rest to the dog. If I had had a rough day out on the trail I would have been able to eat the two serving package with no problem. I usually don't eat freeze dry food and I about burned my mouth because I ate the stew without giving it time to cool off. I boiled water and put it in the package which was in a cozy. The first bite was so hot I couldn't get a cold drink down fast enough to keep from burning my mouth. I gave this product 4 stars not because it was good beef stew but because it made a filling meal that I could see myself eating. -Vance, Michigan “Nothing a little hot sauce can't fix” Mostly potatoes, and cut small, so this stew does have a slight starchy taste almost like it has instant mashed potatoes in it. Definitely not my favorite, but still better than what you would get out of a can, and nothing that a little chipotle hot sauce can't fix. -Bill, Kabul, Afghanistan “Not like Mom's Beef Stew” I ate this stuff after a brutal rain soaked hike into the Smoky Mountains. Not even that made this edible. Ended up eating 1/3 of it and could not take any more. No flavor, mostly potatoes, yuck! -Anon, Pigeon Forge, TN

“For Sure Fav” Very tasty! Easy to make! Oh so good! My expectations were low for these meals all together and this was my first one. I liked it so much I went ahead and purchased a few other meals and were surprised with those too! We were near a leek patch and picked fresh diced up and added to this package and was excellent. -Denya, Syracuse, NY “My favorite dehydrated meal” After backpacking into Kalalau on Kauai, I wolf down an entire package of this myself. It has a good consistency, lots of meat and noodles, good flavor. Filling and satisfying after a long backpacking trek. -Pam, Honolulu, HI “Best Meal yet” Best of a week of good meals by Mountain House -Rich, IL “Best Beef Stroganoff by far” Made to the package directions, the noodles and beef are very tender and the sauce has the best consistancy and flavor of any of the Beef Stroganoff entrees that I have tried. Mountain House (Oregon Freeze Dry) manufactures long range and winter rations for the US Military and this is always the first entree to be dug out of the box. -Bill, Kabul, Afghanistan “The All-time Best” I have been eating lyophilized food since I was a young scout back in the eighties. This is the best freeze-dried entree I've eaten, all producers included. I first read about it in a book by Jerry Ahern when I was in high school. This was the protagonist's favorite, so I imagine it was the author's as well. Thank you Mr. Ahern. -Duke, Fayettenam, NC “This ALWAYS scores big” Have taken many kids and adults on various trips with lots of freeze-dried fair. This ALWAYS scores big. It is cheap but tastes awesome. I always take it. -Jim Edmondson, Pulaski, TN

“Plenty of pineapple” Prepared to the directions on the package, the texture of the pork remains slightly chewy. The only problem with letting it rest longer, is that the rice gets a bit mushy. The sauce has a nice twang to it to offset the sweetness of all of the pineapple (and there is plenty of it). All in all, it remains one of my favorites.

“Great base mix for large groups” One of the favorite meals for our semi annual backpacking trips! We mix in tuna packs, rehydrated corn, potatoes and other vegis. Add a little powdered milk , top with grated cheese and "oyster" crackers and feast!! You could even carry canned clams (if you're so inclined)! -GeezerGriz, Montana “Excellent!” Cold, wet Boundary Waters trip--threw some left over fried fish into the pot--outstanding! -Iowa “Another winner from Mountain House” I must admit that I was a bit hesitant to try another freeze dried seafood entree after my first experience (not a MH product), but this one turned out to be a nice surprise. The consistency and taste were better than anything that I have ever tasted from a can, with much larger pieces of clam, and the smell was pure heaven. The only giveaway that this wasn't a fresh seafood chowder was the texture of the potatoes (all freeze dried potatoes have a diced french fry texture to me). This will definitely be on my regular order list. -Bill, Kabul, Afghanistan
