“Very good for lunch” Nicely flavored. Big, slightly sweet crackers. A little hard to rehydrate, maybe because the chicken chunks are good size (not shredded). Not a huge portion for 2, so plan on eating something else, too.It was hard to find freeze dried chicken salad so I was happy to find this and liked it! -Matt, Texas

“Delicious and Satisfying” I don't like peas, but this chowder was delicious. Creamy and flavorful, it made a great, quick dinner after a long, cold, rainy day of canoeing. The corn is nice and sweet and the pea puree was almost like a salty potato base. My favorite meal on the whole trip. -CW, Portland, OR

“Good for omlets.” This egg mix tasted better than I expected. It is difficult to make scrambled eggs with as the mixture even when watered down alot tends to rise a little like a pancake. Fortunately this is IDEAL for making omlets and fritattas. The resulting cooked egg tastes great without tasting too "eggy" and is light and fluffy. Not exactly the same texture as fresh egg, but good enough. This mixture also worked well as egg substitute in pancakes and johnnycake. I found the best way to rehydrate the powdered egg to avoid clumping was to shake it vigorously with water in a small nalgene bottle. -The Turk, Astoria, NY

“Good ingredient!” This product is an easy way to add protein (MEAT!) to camp meals without carrying alot of weight. This chicken rehydrates quickly. It is a good addative to soups, noodle and rice dishes. Since dice is small (about 1/4") it does not work as well in dishes where chicken is the prominent ingredient or needs to be in big chunks. I chose Alpine Aire for its low sodium content and it tastes great! -The Turk, Astoria, NY

“So Good and So Easy” If you want a filling breakfast quick, add a little cold water and your ready to go. The milk and blueberries really hit the spot. -Hoosier, Connersville, IN “Yummmm......” Loved it on a chilly Michigan morning. Plenty for two. We like it a little thick with less than the called for water. -Krista, Claire, MI “Hot or cold it hits the spot!” I've had this meal on both long winter trips where the warm milk and granola really warms you up, and summer trips were all you need is the fresh blueberries and cold milk to set you day off right. Either way, this dish is versitle and a real hit! -Jeremiah, Fairbanks, Alaska “This is a 10!” Starting the day with a great meal is really a bonus while on the trail and this breakfast is first rate. Large berries, good mix of grains, not too sweet, and the milk is a nice touch. -Rob, Aurora, Ohio

“This stuff is crazy good” One just adds cold water ( the colder the better) and wait a while ( best the next day, if you can stand the wait) also seems best if one has an ice cooler or small fridge to keep chilled. “Spicy” Was hunting in Alaska and had this. It was GREAT. Thanks Backpackers Pantry. -Kansas “Darn good” When rating backpacking food I feel as though we need to remember it comes in a bag, freeze dried. For all that, it tasted really good. The meal comes with peanuts and a tube of peanut butter that really adds a nice flavor to the noodles. I enjoyed the meal. -Kevin Roberge, Old Town, Maine “Backpacker Magazine, June 2003” Even Asian food devotees agree: These noodles actually taste like real Pad Thai. Unlike with most freeze-dried fare, flavor actually improved as the dish cooled. Plus, it comes in a stand-up pouch and is fortified with a natural multivitamin supplement.</br> Prepare yourself! You'll be thanking your stars that this dish could serve three people! If you don't split this meal into seperate containers, you'll be racing your partner to the bottom of the bag. Short of Thailand, this is the best Thai Food you are going to get! -Jeremiah, Fairbanks, Alaska “Not as good as Expected” I love Pad Thai and I order it at every Thai restaurant I go to. But this just wasn't very good to me, the noodles weren't right and the peanut flavor (usually my favorite part) was lost among other spices. -Morgan, Sacramento, CA

“The Best Olive Oil” This packet of olive is great! I'm not a camper or back packer, but I love having these single servings of olive oil to throw in my purse or lunch bag. “Best so far” The closest product I have found to regular whole milk. Mixed up a batch at home (dont like experiment on the trail) and my 5 year old son liked it better than the regular refrigerated version. Combining dry cereal from home with this product in a zipper bag is a surefire hit with kids who are finicky about breakfast. Also nice to have close by when preparing recipes requiring milk either a premix for an outing or in the kitchen when your running low in the fridge. -Steven, Lumberton, NC “Could have fooled me...” The bag i purchased was resealable and this is a great product. Had i not mixed it myself with cold enough water it can pass as the real thing... I used it for oatmeal as well and actually packed in a few butter packets scored from nearby a fast food joint... Just like home! -BackpackingGreenHorn, Northern California “Wish it came in a resealable bag” Pretty tasty as far as powdered milk goes, most likely because it is whole milk and not fat free. I usually make it up about a cup at a time to mix into my oatmeal. -Bill, Kabul, Afghanistan

However, I am usually out for a minimum of 7 days and usually 10 plus days with no food drops. “Best Meal yet” Best of a week of good meals by Mountain House -Rich, IL “Best Beef Stroganoff by far” Made to the package directions, the noodles and beef are very tender and the sauce has the best consistancy and flavor of any of the Beef Stroganoff entrees that I have tried. Mountain House (Oregon Freeze Dry) manufactures long range and winter rations for the US Military and this is always the first entree to be dug out of the box. -Bill, Kabul, Afghanistan “The All-time Best” I have been eating lyophilized food since I was a young scout back in the eighties. This is the best freeze-dried entree I've eaten, all producers included. I first read about it in a book by Jerry Ahern when I was in high school. Thank you Mr. Ahern. -Duke, Fayettenam, NC “This ALWAYS scores big” Have taken many kids and adults on various trips with lots of freeze-dried fair. This ALWAYS scores big. “Great base mix for large groups” One of the favorite meals for our semi annual backpacking trips! We mix in tuna packs, rehydrated corn, potatoes and other vegis. Add a little powdered milk , top with grated cheese and "oyster" crackers and feast!! You could even carry canned clams (if you're so inclined)! -GeezerGriz, Montana “Excellent!” Cold, wet Boundary Waters trip--threw some left over fried fish into the pot--outstanding! -Iowa “Another winner from Mountain House” I must admit that I was a bit hesitant to try another freeze dried seafood entree after my first experience (not a MH product), but this one turned out to be a nice surprise. The consistency and taste were better than anything that I have ever tasted from a can, with much larger pieces of clam, and the smell was pure heaven. The only giveaway that this wasn't a fresh seafood chowder was the texture of the potatoes (all freeze dried potatoes have a diced french fry texture to me). “My absolute favorite” Spicy Thai Chicken is my all time favorite freeze dried meal. It is especially great in the winter, not the kind of spice that makes your GI tract burn, more the " make your nose run" kind of spice. Tons of carbs and salt -I just add a package of peanuts for some fat and it's a totally satisfying meal. “Natural High Thai Chicken” Pretty good but look to add a little less water than instructions say. Was a little soupy. I say about one oz less. -Uncle Buck, Flanders, NJ “Natural High Thai Chicken” First off let me say I liked this, and will buy it again. It was not exactly what I expected. When I read "peanut sauce" I was thinking the sweet type one encounters on many Thai noodle dishes. This one is not sweet, but piquant -- vinegary -- and is certainly mildly spicy (your tongue will have a slight tang such as that caused by a little black pepper.) It is not so spicy that you will need to submerse your tongue in water or anything.I concur with the previous reviewer who said the mix would be better with a tad less water added. I added exactly 16 ounces of water and the dish was "saucy" -- not soupy. Next time I will add 15 ounces and see if that makes it perfect. The noodles are cut into inch-long pieces, and the veggies are flaked (for the most part), so it is a dish easy to eat with a spork. This meal is labeled two servings, but it would be one large serving for someone who isn't having any side dishes. -Tat8er, Cambridge, MA “Better Than The Others” Agree with the others, add less water than it says. Besides that I rather liked it. Sometiimes backpackers food tends to need spice, but this had just enough. But I don't remember any peanut flavor at all. -Morgan, Sacramento, CA

“Gourmet dessert in the backcountry” Enough for two -- if you really *want* to share. What makes this tasty dessert special is the almond crumb topping. NICE! -Buck, New Jersey“slop” this was so bad that none of us would eat it, we had to bury it. “Backpacker Magazine, June 2003” Never fear: It's not just another mac and cheese. This novel creation, with corn, peas, tomatoes, peppers, and onions, delivers a real kick. Cooks in a pouch for easy prep. The catch? The cheese sauce can be difficult to blend. “Tasty” Very good Mac n Cheese with Kick -Buck, New Jersey “Mac n Cheese field test” Excellent flavor. Its nice to eat pasta that is actually pasta-not small bits and pieces. With experimentation I found using 2 oz of water less than called for made the best sauce. Also, break down the sauce package so that you aren/t adding lumps to the mixture. I used the bottom of my cup to grind it down. I found the lumps would not break down on their own in the water. -Cooper, Dallas, TX “This isn't your mom's mac” It's better! Real macaroni noodles with veggies and a super cheese sauce. I found previous reviews helpful in ensuring no lumps by breaking down the sause package prior to adding to the hot mix. Great taste with a real nice zing! -Rob, Aurora, Ohio

“Teton Teriyaki” This was a great dinner on the 1st cool night in the Smokies this fall. I added some dehydrated chicken for a complete meal. Bobby Woods, Lincolnton, NC “Enertia's Teriyaki” Just got some today from you guys, and I always try my foods out at home before I take them on the trail. The sauce is super-sweet. Almost too sweet. Lot of pineapple flavor but it's definitely teriyaki... just very sweet. the small salt packet helps a tad but it's still very sweet.Only complaint was a couple clumps of the sauce powder was stuck together (might have been my fault for not mixing it well enough) and when I spooned them into my mouth the texture caught me off guard. All in all, I would recommend this. Chad, Winchester, VA

“Sneak nutrition into picky kids” It is really tough to get nutritious, high-antioxidant foods into my picky four year old. We just discovered these strawberries and they are a dream come true! Give 'em a try! -Picky eater's mom, Tallahassee, FL “Great for No-Sugar Jam” I can't eat sugar, so I make a "jam" out of these freeze-dried strawberries. Just mix them with water and thickener (e.g., guar gum). Great by itself, but for more intense flavor, you can add no-sugar sweetener and/or natural strawberry flavoring. -Washington, DC “These are the BEST” I got tired of paying much higher prices for a box of cereal just because it had a few and I do mean a few freeze dried strawberries so I started looking and found these, they are much BETTER than the ones in cereal and I can add as many as I want....have to ration myself to make them last more than 2 days. -Karen E., Albion, Indiana “Mmmmm” These strawberries are soo good! I bring them with me every time I go on vacation and they're my favorite snack by far. The only problem is that they are rarely in supply near me...where are they sold? -Just Strawberry lover, Pasadena, CA “Yummy!!” We started eating these because the baby I watch was eating the toddler version. My kids and I loved them so much, I started looking for freeze dried strawberries for us big kids. These are the greatest snack. I put them in my oatmeal and it made it so much better than plain old cinnamon. -Carin, Eastpointe, MI

“Great item for backpacking” This cozy was the hit of our weeklong backpacking trip into the Sierras. I bought it with the thought my homemade vacuum packed meals would re-hydrate more efficiently than when wrapped in my jacket (that I often wished I was wearing). I ended up being able to cram 2 full meals into the cozy which virtually eliminated the usual simmering over the stove. What a fuel saver. I'm getting another cozy because the zipper on my backpack tore my first one up a bit. Highly recommended! -Meg, Turloc, CA “Saves time and fuel” We're always looking for ways to save some ounces on the trail. “BakePacker Rocks!” We love the BakePacker. It's the most versatile tool I bring camping. I do agree with the previous posting that the stuff takes longer than the recipes state. For instance, when we bake a cake, it takes about 40 minutes rather than the 20 minutes the booklet claims. Still, it's awesome. We make baked omelettes in it and they come out perfectly with no mess. We also reheat precooked rice in it, and even steam vegetables... all with no mess. Definitely like it for the cakes. Bring a jar of Nutella along for frosting. Love it. -Tsan, Berkeley “This is the coolest gear ever!” I found the Bakepacker and decided to try it out. It has fast become my favorite camping kitchen tool and I now own a second one! I love the ability to make muffins for breakfast, cake for dessert, and add extra noodles to the freeze dried meals. I'm also having fun adapting meals that I really enjoy to my bakepacker. I regularly rave about this tool to anyone who looks remotely interested. :-) The only complaint I have ever had is that things seem to take a lot longer to cook than the recepe indicates. I don't know if I'm not cooking at a high enough temperature, have too much water in the recipe, or if it's due to the pan being just slightly larger than the tool. It really doesn't matter, I just experiment at home to get a better idea of how long it will take to cook. Thanks for designing this great tool! -Jeri Lynn C. “Close to Home Baked” I really like the backpacker because of its light weight. - It easily fits inside a standard pot. Food is cooked in a bag that sits on this metal screen thing. Essentially the food is "steam baked" in the bag. - I find food to be a bit "wetter" than normal baked goods but pretty darn good. Add to it the fact that you are enjoying it in the backcountry and life does not get any better.- One other positive is that you can use it with a canister stove unlike an outback oven where the fuel source has to be separate. -Deanna, Crested Butte, CO

“Award winner” A Backpacker Magazine Editor's Choice award winner and our new choice for favorite bear container. The opening is wide enough to get your food out easily and the clear construction means never having to open all six containers to find breakfast! -Wilderness Dining “Bear vault approval” It's certainly great to have a manufacturer keep working on a design to make it better, striving for excellence without financially ripping off the needy user. Works great- especially like to see-thru sides and large opening my old Garcia didn't have. -R. Thompson, Ojai, CA “My Favorite Bear Can so Far...” I've tried numerous bear cans over the years and this is the best I've used so far. I like the overall interior size and the weight is decent for a bear can. The lid is a little hard to open but a stick usually seems to do the trick. I like the clear plastic and the interior space is smooth and more efficient than other cans I've used. It has little dots on it that are supposedly for strapping it on a pack but they are so tiny they don't do much. Like all bear cans this size, they are supposed to hold 7 days of food but I must be a pig because I'm lucky to get in a weekend's worth of food. One word of warning, I've read that some parks like in NY do not allow these as the bears have learned to bounce on them and the pop open. -Deanna, Crested Butte, CO

If they would only make the clip metal, it would be a tremendous improvement. -Kris, N Michigan “Great concept but....” Wonder if Kris is a bit hamfisted??....I have had two of these squeeze tubes for 20 years and they work just fine. they are used regularly too. Nigel in UK -Nigel Gifford, England “Plastic Clip sucks” I like the reusable tubes, but the plastic clips break very easily. -Rich, Connecticut

“Lightweight Yet Effective” I purchased one of these, though not here but locally, and I have to say that I don't go backpacking without it. A 2 1/2 gallon capacity is enough to fill most every water container in camp before having to replenish. A quick flip inside out and several arms length rotations and I pack it right back up till out next campsite. I highly recommend one for those weekend (or greater) backpacking trips. -Carl H., Spokane, WA

“Marshmallow Forks for Artists!” We bought these quite a few years ago and they have lasted very well. They also extent to a great length so that is nice for hot fires. Everyone who tries them thinks they are fun, and they allow for PERFECTION in your roasting technique! :) -Nancy, Spokane, WA “Rolla Roaster Hot Dog Forks” These are excellent campfire utensils! We love them for roasting marshmallows. They extend 48" and that keeps little ones back from the campfire and the rotating design make for perfect marshmallows or hot dogs every time. Telescoping design allows for easy storage in our camp box. I'm buying them for friends for Christmas. A must have camping item. -Kevin, Oak Harbor, WA

“Definitely the ONE to get!” Have had this for over 6 years and it is perfect. If you backpack or are just an avid outdoorsperson, this is a key companion. 1 gallon of water weighs over 8 pounds! This weighs 11oz... The filters last a really long time and the pictured adapter connects the outlet to a nalgene bottle (wide and narrow mouth) so you just sit by the creek or pond and pump for a minute with no need to hold the bottle. -Beau B., Fernley, NV “Great Filter” Used this filter on many hikes now, never had a problem with it so far. Some claim in clogs up on them, but with simple maintinance and cleaning between trips, I have been VERY satisfied with it. Add a coffee filter over the input hose for longer life. -Ft. Worth, TX “Good but some problems” this is a good water filter with lots of attachments to connect it to a hydra pack or a nalagene. But it sometimes adds visible active carbon (charcoal) into the water and also may not taste good. It is good if u use like kool-aid singles w/ it. -Drew, Austin, TX

“Bye-Bye Bear Bags” We have had no issues with these canisters. They are easy to use and fit in our packs. No hanging bear bag. When used with a plastic bag it contains odors. You can sit on it. Oh, and it's indestructible to bears and airport baggage handlers. -The Turk, Astoria, NY

“great design and tough” I have had the 2 person for a few years and love it. It is well designed and is also quality made. The insulating sleeve works very well without adding much weight. If I had one suggestion it would be to insulate the bowl as well. One thing that isn't mention in the add is the pot is designed to heat evenly and transfer the heat well so boil times are fast and food cooks evenly. Very impressed with this set. -Randy, Stony Plain, Alberta

“Our Favorite piece of camping gear!” We've had one for about 8-10 years. It's been all over the country on backpack, canoe, and kayak trips. We LOVE it! Make everything from pizza to home-made apple pie! We even bought a second one we are keeping to replace ours when it wears out! We have the 8" and don't have problems w/ scorchinig the pot parka but our stove has good flame adjustment! -JRS, Madison, WI “Works like a charm” We take in those little Pillsbury cinnamin roll tubes (yeah, I know. Not very ultralight) and the Outback Oven works like a charm. My stove is one of those old (20 years old) MSR canister stoves (they look like the Whisperlite) and we've never had a problem. Now I take it for my kids to make a sweet treat on the trail. -JKC, Pacific Grove, CA “Foolproof baking every time” We've used this oven in the Sierras and San Bernardino mountains many times. What a treat to have hot brownies or fresh pizza twenty miles from the trailhead! -Wilderness Dining “Consider the 10 inch!” The smaller diamater of the pot parka, combined with a hard-to-adjust stove, can make if difficult to prevent scorching the pot parka and creating a plume of smoke as one bakes. For that reason, either use an alcohol stove or purchase the 10 inch model. -Paul F., Grand Rapids, MI

“Perfect for my solo Motorcycle camping” Even the nicest campstove also needs it's metal containers of fuel....this Esbit doesn't need you to carry anything heavy..just a a few Esbit fuel tablets...heats water in minutes.each tablet lasts me at least 12 minutes..1 or 2 can cook my breakfast on one stove, while 1 tablet makes my coffee on the other little stove!!! I never go camping without them....
-Patti Heveron, Rochester, NY “Lightweight, efficient, but not for Gourmet Cooks” This little stove will boil water and rehydrate "instant" dishes like instant grits, instant oatmeal, cocoa, Lipton's instant chicken noodle soup, minute rice, etc. If you are looking for an ultralight stove for simple but nourishing, hot fare, this is the one to buy. If you want to do a three course camp meal, go get a Coleman Multi-burner monstrosity and forget back-packing. -Mark, Macon, GA

You have great flame control from simmer to wide open. The only issue that I have is that it is loud. -Hoosier, Connersville, IN “Dannybb55” This is the stove used in Antarctica, and has been copied by most countries with any manufacturing capability. You can reasonably expect 20 years of use before any maintenance is needed and then only o rings will need replacing. 100 y/o stoves are common. -Danny Nye, Beaufort, NC
