“Should be called Beef Stroganoff with Black Pepper” I got called away after mixing this one up, so it had an additional 15 minutes to rest. When I first made it (2 1/2 cups of water) I was concerned, but after resting for approximately 20-25 minutes, both the consistency and texture were very good. The taste of black pepper overpowers the almost unnoticeable flavor of the mushrooms. Not a bad choice if you like a lot of black pepper. -Bill, Kabul, Afghanistan

“One of the best” I really like this Mexican-inspired dish. The taste -- and particularly the texture are great! You add boiling water and the corn chips included in the bag soften and meld into the not-too-spicy bean and rice seasoned mixture. “Second only to Mountain House” This would be my second choice if Mountain House wasn't available. The noodles and beef have a nice texture and the sauce has a very good consistency. The taste is good and you can tell the difference between beef, mushrooms, etc. which has not always been the case with others that I have tasted. Overall, the quality is equal to Mountain House, I just prefer the taste of the MH a bit more. -Bill, Kabul, Afghanistan

Mountain House Beef Stew - Pro-Pak 1 serving

“Better than I thought it would be.” Better than I thought it would be. I actually ate this at home. I had been carrying the stew around in my pack as a last resort while backpacking, for a couple of years. While organizing my backpacking equipment I come across the beef stew. There was another freeze dry product in the same food bag that had developed a small hole in the package. I threw that one away (different company). Since I was hungry I decided to try the beef stew. The beef stew was okay but didn't remind much of homemade beef stew or even canned beef stew. I ate 3/4's of the package and gave the rest to the dog. If I had had a rough day out on the trail I would have been able to eat the two serving package with no problem. I usually don't eat freeze dry food and I about burned my mouth because I ate the stew without giving it time to cool off. I boiled water and put it in the package which was in a cozy. The first bite was so hot I couldn't get a cold drink down fast enough to keep from burning my mouth. I gave this product 4 stars not because it was good beef stew but because it made a filling meal that I could see myself eating. -Vance, Michigan “Nothing a little hot sauce can't fix” Mostly potatoes, and cut small, so this stew does have a slight starchy taste almost like it has instant mashed potatoes in it. “Worth hiking for” I would backpack just to have an excuse to eat this.
